Following a series of planning and prior approval applications, permission has been granted for the conversion and extension of the historic Cigar Factory, the redevelopment of the Old Fire Station, and the delivery of a new-build development.
Originally constructed in the late 19th century as ‘Factory Building 9’ for the Wills Tobacco Company, later part of the Imperial Tobacco Works, the red-brick warehouse stands as a local landmark. Its distinctive industrial design and scale have made it a defining feature of the Southville townscape.
The consented scheme delivers a vibrant mixed-use development, combining residential apartments and commercial office space. A new-build block, Wills Yard, adds further apartments and townhouses to the site.
The development was designed by Bristol-based WH Architects for Ellson Homes, with Aspect360 providing comprehensive planning consultancy services. Aspect360 managed the planning process, coordinated applications, and presented the proposals to Bristol’s planning committee. All applications were successfully approved, and the development has now been completed. All residential units have been sold, and the commercial offices fully let.
The project has preserved the site’s distinctive industrial character while enhancing the vibrancy of Southville, a popular Bristol neighbourhood known for its community atmosphere and the independent shops, cafés, and bars along nearby North Street.
