New Uses for Period Commercial Building – The Axiom, 55-59 Winchcombe Street, Cheltenham

The Axium, Cheltenham

Working alongside WH Architects, Aspect360 successfully secured planning permission for the sensitive conversion of a historic period warehouse and workshop dating back to the 1800s in central Cheltenham.

The building’s decorative brick frontage, featuring distinctive glazed blue brick and terracotta detailing, gives it a unique character. To the rear, the three-storey red brick structure with large arched openings is typical of the industrial vernacular of the period. Its architectural and historic qualities were recognised as making a positive contribution to Cheltenham’s Central Conservation Area, being valued for their local significance.

Over the years, the building had served various functions, including housing the Cheltenham Centre for Visual and Performing Arts. However, in more recent times, it had fallen vacant and into disrepair. Our clients acquired the site with a view to restoring and repurposing it to secure its long-term future.

As part of the planning process, Aspect360 engaged with the Cheltenham Civic Society, who were strongly supportive of the proposed approach. Despite a number of complex planning challenges, we achieved consent for a mixed-use scheme comprising a ground-floor commercial unit fronting Winchcombe Street, with eleven residential apartments above.

The scheme was subsequently taken forward by Cape Homes, who implemented a modified version of the development. Their work was recognised with a Cheltenham Civic Award in 2019, celebrating the successful preservation and adaptation of this important historic building.
