Red Cottages, Leigh Woods

Red Cottages, Leigh Woods

Following detailed pre-application discussions with the local planning authority and the resolution of various technical matters, full planning permission was granted for a contemporary extension to a pair of period cottages, now combined into a single dwelling. Located within a designated conservation area and adjacent to Grade II listed buildings, the project required a careful and sensitive approach to design and planning.

The property was in need of significant refurbishment and thermal upgrade. The clients sought to create a modern home, incorporating a large open-plan rear extension, enhanced access and parking arrangements, and a series of outbuildings to support contemporary family life.

Given the sensitive heritage context and the presence of ecological and arboricultural constraints, Aspect360 were appointed to manage the planning process and provide strategic planning and design advice. Their role was key in guiding the project through to a successful planning outcome.

105 West Architects led the design, creating a contemporary yet contextually respectful scheme that balanced the historic character of the cottages with the demands of modern living. They also provided construction-phase support in collaboration with Structural Solutions. Construction was delivered by 21st Century Building Services.

The result is a well-integrated, high-performance home that harmonises modern architectural expression with a sensitive historic setting.
